Surviving Back-to-School Season

Back to School season usually consists of two kinds of people. The ones who love nothing more than buying new pens, pencils, and planners and the ones who practically cringe seeing the school supplies go up in stores. Whichever category you fall into, there’s almost no escaping it. It’s that time! Whether you’re the parent getting your kid ready for their first day of kindergarten or a college student scheduling your classes, there are a few ways to survive the back-to-school season.

Survival Tip 1:
Set a sleeping routine early. Start going to bed at a decent time now, putting aside your summer schedule of staying up late and waking up late, so by the time your early mornings come around, you’re not dragging yourself out of bed half asleep. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself on your first day back!

Survival Tip 2:
Plan your day the night before. If you’re the kind of person who is always running around in the morning trying to scramble together your books, make breakfast, and somehow throw on a decent outfit, try planning out your day the night before. Pick out an outfit, get your school supplies together and in order, and give yourself time to make breakfast. This will make for an easy morning and a less stressful day ahead.

Survival Tip 3:
Get to know your professor or teacher. Send an email introducing yourself or stay after class to let them know anything extra you can do to help around the classroom or get ahead on the class material. You can also get to know them in our favorite way, obviously, with a cookie bouquet or some cupcakes. At Grandville’s Cookies and Cupcake by Design, we have an array of back-to-school cookie bouquets to help get on the teacher’s good side. Nothing says you’re ready to learn like some delicious cupcakes. We can even hand-deliver them to your classroom in the greater Grand Rapids area, Lansing, Lakeshore, and Kalamazoo!

Going back to school can be quite the transition, but with these tips, you can survive the frenzy that is Back to School season!

Family Reunion Season is in Full Swing

July is officially known as Family Reunion Month.  This is a good time to get relatives to all come together. Whether it is families who see each other every weekend or ones that haven’t seen each other in years, this month is dedicated to finally planning that trip you’ve been putting off and get together with the people who are most important in your life.

There are many ways to put on a family reunion. In past years, my family has rented out a wing of a hotel because there are so many of us. However, some families can get together and  just stay at one of the relative’s houses.

It may be difficult for everyone to find a week, or even just a weekend, when everyone can get together. My family put it off for years because there was always one or two that couldn’t swing it. However, when we all finally made it happen one year, we realized how important it is to gather with the ones you love.

Take that week or weekend off that you have been telling yourself you would to go see your family. It may seem like you could be doing other things, like working around the house or getting that job done, but once you finally do, it will be worth it.

Need some help deciding where to hold your family reunion?  Here are some ideas;

And don’t even fret about how you are going to supply food for the reunion because we have that covered. We deliver custom cookie bouquets and cupcakes to the greater Grand Rapids area, Lakeshore, Lansing, and Kalamazoo. For all of our cookies and cupcake options, follow this link and place your order!

Using National Holidays to Build Your Brand

Have you noticed that there is now a National Holiday for every occasion, hobby, favorite food, pet peeve or any other reason you can envision? Who created all these holidays, and how do they become “National” or recognized? states that a truly “National” day is literally an act of Congress, if you are so inclined the first step is to contact your local congress person. Once you have their attention, you have to create the proposal and hopefully it will get onto the congressional agenda before too many years has passed. If you are intent on doing it and have the patience, it can be done, for more info.

World Smile Day is October 2 and to be honest, we are all Smiles about another National Holiday! With a business like ours that is geared towards celebrating life’s moments and also celebrating the Big Holidays (Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Easter, etc) these National days give us:

  • Something to talk about with our customers
  • A chance to get noticed in the Social Media world , and bring banter to the back room.

If only I had videotaped the discussion on how a cute little cookie and cupcake shop could promote “Virus Appreciation Day”! (Oct 3) There is a day only pharmaceutical companies could love or computer peeps.  Or how about “Bald and Free Day”?  (Oct 7)  Yes, you are now free from buying shampoo. For “Moldy Cheese Day” (Oct 9) we thought of creating  a Blue Cheese Cupcake!

So after we got a good laugh, I asked my creative team for their input on World Smile Day. We know that our product already does that, so we decided to focus on how we can create more smiles and my creative team came up with passing out our fresh-baked Chocolate Chip Cookies with a cute little message tag that says “Today is World Smile Day, Pay this forward to bring a smile”. This makes me smile to give something away and if it goes over well we can also do it again for “Pay it Forward Day” (April 28);)

How can you use National Holidays to build your brand?
